Registration Fields - Character Length

Registration Fields - Character Length

With regard to the registration fields, some are limited at 20 characters (e.g. 'home' and 'postal code'), and some are limited at 25 characters (e.g. 'company' and 'city')...Where is this field length controlled, and how can I increase the maximum character length?
