How does the Search function work

How does the Search function work

I am interested to know how the search feature works, since it does not seem to pull info logically. On my site if I put in a search for "tents", the search will pull up tents but it will pull up a whole host of other things that arent tents or even related. Is there a way to make the system only pull items related to the search term?
