Attribute - Frontend - If no item select displays 404 Not Found Screen

I have noticed that when a product is selected that has attributes and the user does not select an attribute from the drop down list the page goes on to display a 404 Not Found screen.

Previously if this occured you were returned to the product page.

Can you advise what the problem could be.

Are you able to point me in the right direction ? I have made no adjustment to the ICE template. This used to work just fine.
