The message 'TAX ID: wrong country code' is preventing the user to proceed and I don't know what else I should do to fix up the error.

Thanks so much, now it seems to work.

The strange thing is that I have installed the plugin AFTER the problem arose this morning. Anyway, now the component works which is the goal.

I just want to point out a strange behaviour of the cart, that I have noted while trying to fix the above error:
if you logout when the cart has got products in it, the delete icon next to the product is unable to remove the product itself, and even if you put the quantity to zero, it reverts to the previous quantity. The cart is updated only if you login again.

Not a big issue, as while logging the user clearly wants to abandon the order, so the cart is meaningless.
