Calculate for weight/price/postal code - How accurate does postcode have to be?

I'm looking at purchasing the calculate shipping for weight/price/postal code and am based in the UK shipping to the UK.

With regards to the postcodes used, am I able to set the values to read just the area code of the postcode rather than the whole postcode itself?

i.e set PE as a parameter so that all postcodes in that area entered by the customer such as PE24 5LP and PE22 0RH are automatically treated as all being PE?
