Product attributes filtering

Hello.

Let's say I have a page of products, having 2 attributes - size and color.
There are products of size 1 and 2, colors - black and white.

I choose white and products get filtered fine, however
if there are no products which are both "white" and "size 1",
"size 1" should disappear from the list of available filtering options,
however this doesn't happen.

Was this behaviour intended and can there be a solution - matching not only the products list, but also other attributes list against the selected filtering rules?

I have managed to come up with a working solution,
which implies introducing two simple functions to helper
and a small hack to the template.
This doesn't strictly follow the MVC, but tapping into
this framework makes my head ache.

So much for the technical support.
